Common Name:Banksia menziesii, commonly known as Firewood Banksia because of it ability to burn quick and abundance.
Location:It is found in Western Australia, from the Perth region north to the Murchison River.
Tree: The Banksia tree is a gnarled tree growing to 7 meters (23 ft). The trunk is grayish and rough with serrated leaves grey-green in color 8-25 cm long and up to 4 cm wide. Flowering occurs in autumn and winter.
The Pods:

The pod is the result of a flower. When turned you can see three separate layers.  The outer layer, a red felt like middle layer.  The center layer is very dense.

Workability: The pod can be turned but eye protection must be worn.  The seeds are very sharp and fly out during turning.
